Wednesday (8/29) Weekly Theme: Black & White

August 31, 2007

From now on, our Wednesday themes will last a week-long rather than just one day. This will give you a chance to search through your photostream and even take a new picture if needed.   For this theme, photos may have been taken at any time, but must be submitted by 11:59pm Central Time on Tuesday, September 4.

In addition to group members submitting their photo for this theme, they must ALSO find and invite an additional photo from around flickr that fits the theme. That photo should be invited to the pool as well as be entered into the theme contest by posting it in the thread!

Our first weekly theme is: Black & White.  Thanks to kunstkammer , a bonus winner in the Green theme, for the great theme selection!

Photominos #1

August 27, 2007

Our first game of Photominos is complete.  For those of you asking, “What is that??”  It is photo dominos.  The idea starts with one image, and each member then contributes another image that somehow reminds/relates to the preceding image. Sometimes the transitions are smooth where each image might have “water” as a main element, sometimes it might be abrupt, where the color of the water in one image becomes the main element in the next image which has no water. Creativity is key!

Diminishing Smile selected the following two images as the best transition:

Saturday Setup #2: Aperture – Wide Open vs Stopped Down

August 26, 2007

For our second assignment, we explored the use of aperture

ASSIGNMENT DETAILS:
For the first photograph, set the aperture (or f-stop) to the smallest opening possible. Remember, the larger the f-stop number, the smaller the opening. Either adjust your shutter speed to the appropriate exposure, or you may shoot in aperture-priority mode. Focus on the object in the middle (about 10 feet from the camera) of the scene.

Now take the same image (same subject, same angle, same lens, etc) using the largest aperture possible. Adust your shutter speed for the correct exposure, or you may shoot in aperture-priority mode.

Examine the differences between the two photos and determine which one you feel works best for your image and why. Include this explanation when you post your images.

We got some great results that clearly show how aperture may be used to take more creative control of our photos.  Click on any of the photos for a closer comparison and more details:
